LEGO Star Wars 25th anniversary minifigure characters – too obscure?
With two LEGO Star Wars 25th anniversary minifigures revealed so far, we could potentially be looking at even more obscure characters to come.
We had our first glimpse at two new LEGO Star Wars sets for 2024 yesterday, with an initial look at 75379 R2-D2 and 75387 Boarding the Tantive IV. Thanks to early listings for the models, we not only know what to expect from both upcoming builds, but also which 25th anniversary minifigures will be included with the sets.
75379 R2-D2 gains its own exclusive minifigure debut in the shape of Darth Malak. Fans of the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic game will be more than familiar with the sinister Sith Lord, a former Jedi who turned to the dark side. The inclusion of the character in the upcoming set may well be one of the main reasons for picking up the build, considering that 75308 R2-D2 already exists.
As well as a selection of six standard minifigures, 75387 Boarding the Tantive IV also comes with fan-favourite clone trooper, Fives. The character made his first appearance in the fifth episode of the animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars series, with CT-27-5555 ultimately meeting his demise at the hands of Commander Fox.
For most LEGO Star Wars fans, both minifigures may be considered quite obscure, having only appeared in spin-off material and never seen in live-action form. However, it’s entirely possible that’s the key reason the LEGO Star Wars design team selected the characters in the first place and may hint at more 25th anniversary minifigures to come.
Rumours have already suggested we might see the likes of a Cal Kestis minifigure arriving this year, which is no doubt sure to please fans of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Also said to be on the way in 2024 is a Young Leia minifigure, potentially representing the look of the character as seen in the Disney+ Obi-Wan Kenobi series.
While both minifigures would probably find a place in some LEGO Star Wars collections, there’s always the possibility that the 25th anniversary minifigure selection might be stretching things just a bit too far. Recent reports hint at the likes of Dark Rey, Jedi Bob, Infinites Darth Vader, Grand Admiral Thrawn and even (yes) Darth Jar Jar for 2024, but would most mainstream LEGO Star Wars fans even know who some of those characters are?
Sure, the LEGO Star Wars design team should absolutely be applauded for trying something different with the 25th anniversary minifigures, but there’s also the risk of stretching credibility beyond a certain point and potentially alienating the theme’s core audience with characters they’re just not interested in.
Ultimately, shouldn’t it really be the LEGO Star Wars sets themselves that drive possible purchases, with exclusive minifigures merely being the icing on the brick-built cake? Then again, there are those fans who may only want to pick up just the 25th anniversary characters – the main model being considered a price worth paying in order to obtain rare (for now) minifigures.
As it currently stands, we’ll have to wait and see how the LEGO Star Wars theme shapes up in 2024, with plenty of rumoured sets yet to be revealed. All speculation regarding any potential 25th anniversary minifigures remains just that for now, until such time as the LEGO Group confirms the existence of more possible characters arriving this year.
