LEGO Ideas third 2023 review closes with 42 projects in the mix

The qualifying period for the third LEGO Ideas 2023 review has finally come to a close, with a total of 42 different projects gunning for a coveted slot in the crowdsourced portfolio.

Roberto Ceruti and Jody Padulano’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory project and Henk van der Linde’s A-Team build were the last two Ideas submissions to reach 10,000 votes in this round, edging into the review phase just before the door closed entirely. They cap off another bumper round of submissions now in contention to become a LEGO Ideas set.

Which – if any – of these 42 proposals will make the cut rests entirely on the LEGO Ideas review board, which consists of stakeholders from across the LEGO Group. Their reasons for green-lighting some projects and rejecting others are never made public on a case-by-case basis, but we know that factors include working with the licence partner, the wider market appeal of a product and its feasibility as a mass-produced design.

The full list of projects in the third 2023 review ranges from minifigure-scale vehicles, buildings and playsets to display models inspired by landmarks, music, space and technology. You can check them all out in the table below.

We’ll likely find out the results of this review at some stage this summer. We’re currently waiting on the results of the second 2023 review, which would historically have dropped in February – but the belated announcement of the first 2023 review results, which arrived in December rather than October 2023 (as was previously the norm), suggests future reveals could be pushed back too.

For its part, the LEGO Ideas team has stated that the second 2023 review results will be revealed ‘as soon as they are ready’, and the collage of projects on the latest blog post still says ‘early 2024’. There are 49 different submissions in contention in that round.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
