A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, WB Games and TT Games unveiled a brand new LEGO Star Wars game. (Emphasis on a long time ago.)
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga offers the most comprehensive look at the Star Wars franchise in a LEGO game to date. But following its initial announcement it was beset by delays, leaving many fans waiting eagerly for any news of progress.
Now it’s out, and thousands of gamers are returning to one of their favourite pop culture worlds. To help you better enjoy it, we’ve got all the key facts about this highly-anticipated title.
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga release date
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga was released on Tuesday, April 5. The game’s initial release date was given as 2020, with its initial trailer premiering at E3 2019. As you can see, this is a game that’s been a long time coming.
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga history
Star Wars has been a key part of LEGO gaming history for some time. In 2005, LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game launched on PC, Mac and contemporary consoles. It established a new template for LEGO games going forward; most LEGO games that succeeded it would adopt its mix of light combat, simple puzzle solving and humorous interpretations of licensed source material.
A sequel focusing on the original trilogy launched in 2006, while an all-in-one game (with some exclusive content) launched in 2007. It was followed by two more titles; one drew inspiration from the Clone Wars TV series, while another took inspiration from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. They’ve been joined over the years by other licensed titles: Marvel Super Heroes, Indiana Jones, Jurassic World and many more have followed in these games’ footsteps.
New (and old) features in LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga shakes up this formula in several different ways. The most obvious change is in the amount of content. Previous LEGO games focused on a relatively small slice of pop culture – say, two to three movies from a franchise. In contrast The Skywalker Saga includes content from the nine main chapters of the Star Wars franchise, referencing others (such as Rogue One) in additional character packs.
Naturally, you can play through the entire game with a friend in local co-op. Online co-op was reportedly considered, but ultimately cut during the development process.
Upon starting the game, you can jump into any of the three movie trilogies (although the second and third chapters of each one are locked to start with). From there, you can play through LEGO versions of all nine episodes, with the mix of humour and slapstick we’ve come to expect. Expect both on-foot and spaceship-based activities – including space combat – to keep things fresh.
Certain environments lean more into the ‘LEGO’ side of LEGO Star Wars this time around, and exhibit the wear and tear such elements would experience in the ‘real’ world. Characters will also get dirtier the more they move around certain environments. The result is a game world that feels more tangible than ever before.
Generally speaking, LEGO games since the mid-’00s have downplayed their LEGO-ness; only minifigures and interactive objects are made of the stuff. That helped telegraph possible player actions, but it also created a certain visual disconnect – something that media like The LEGO Movie made all the more apparent.
Indeed, the other building blocks (pun intended) of the game are more complex now. Our full playthrough of the first level in the game (well, one of them) has highlighted many tweaks to the basic LEGO gameplay.
Gameplay Upgrades
The larger scope of LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga has resulted in many changes to gameplay, and the ways in which we interact with the game world.
Several major changes have been made to combat in The Skywalker Saga – a historically weak link in the LEGO series. In the past, it didn’t take much effort to turn an enemy into a pile of plastic bricks. Now enemies are tougher; they can take more hits, and the shift to over-the-shoulder blaster firing angles requires more accuracy on your part. However, you can now take cover from blaster fire behind walls and barricades – a mechanic that builds on a similar idea in LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Close-quarters combat is also more complex this time around. You can press several different buttons to land a hit on an enemy, and by mixing up your moves you can dispatch them more quickly than you might otherwise. Indeed, you’re going to need to; enemies can block some attacks altogether, forcing you to use a few different attacks during combat.
Boss battles are another aspect of gameplay that’s now more complex than before. Battles against villains like Count Dooku are multi-stage affairs, with multiple health bars to empty during combat. Players need to both attack and defend from attacks, and string together combos to deal more damage at once. They’ll also need to break off from the main battle to fight ancillary enemies (in this case, Super Battle Droids) before they can continue.
Of course, LEGO games aren’t just about fighting all the time. Puzzle-solving also returns from previous LEGO games, and encourages a co-operative element from players; one player may need to perform one task so a second player can perform another task. However, while the specific form factor has changed the level of difficulty has not, reflecting the accessible nature of these titles.
Building LEGO objects in-game has enjoyed a bit of an overhaul, too. Certain objects like barricades can be built (and rebuilt if they’re destroyed) giving you additional options during combat. Outside of combat you even have options for multiple builds; in the Tantive IV level, for instance, you have the choice of building a laser turret or a water cannon. Each one unlocks a different path, but only one can be built during a single playthrough of a level. This encourages the replayability we’ve come to expect from LEGO video games.
Besides fighting and puzzle-solving, you’ll need to engage in a bit of exploration as well. Minikits – a staple of early LEGO games – make a triumphant return in The Skywalker Saga, with five hidden in each story level. Finding all five unlocks a miniature Star Wars vehicle for you to play with in open-world areas.
Outside of story levels, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga gives you 24 open-world planets to run around in. Besides obvious choices such as Tatooine and Hoth, you can explore more recent additions such as Cantonica and Utapau. Each planet comes with a range of missions and hidden collectibles to uncover.
New collectibles in the game include Kyber Bricks and Datacards. Kyber Bricks can be earned in a similar fashion to Gold Bricks in older LEGO titles; you receive them for achieving a variety of tasks such as completing story levels and side missions, achieving True Jedi status during story levels or completing puzzles on planets. You can use them to upgrade characters’ abilities, either on a broad or a specific level.
Datacards are rarer, but unlock cheats within the game. While they can make gameplay easier (by helping you collect studs more quickly, for instance) most of them are just for fun, adding screen effects or novelty items to the game. They can each be unlocked with a single Datacard and a fee payable in LEGO studs.
With all these new features, it’s possible you’ll feel a bit overwhelmed. However, a brand new droid – H1-NT – is on hand to explain them to you. You’ll see him in the game during your exploration, but you’ll also be able to access his explanations from the Extras tab on the pause menu.
Character Classes and Upgrades
Another point of differentiation comes from the characters in the game. While characters in LEGO games have always had unique abilities, The Skywalker Saga makes this idea more explicit with nine character classes. Choose from Jedi, Hero, Scavenger, Scoundrel, Bounty Hunter, Villain, Dark Side, Astromech Droid or Protocol Droid.
A greater change from prior LEGO games is skill upgrades: the abilities of playable characters can now be improved. By collecting Kyber Bricks in-game, players can upgrade various skills and unlock new tools to use. Every upgrade requires you pay both studs and Kyber Bricks to unlock it: the more powerful the upgrade, the more it costs to unlock.
Upgrades fall into two broad categories: core upgrades and class upgrades. Core upgrades change the behaviour of every playable character, regardless of class. Class upgrades change the behaviour of all characters within a specific class (like Jedi or Scavenger) instead.
You can apply upgrades to characters from the pause menu: look for the Upgrades tab in the middle. Keep in mind you must purchase some upgrades before others; you can’t buy Speedy Sprint Level 2 before Speedy Sprint Level 1, for example.

Retro References
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga has a number of subtle nods to its history. For example, you can find references to the original LEGO Star Wars game boxes in the title’s early levels. Look in the Trade Federation ship and Tantive IV corridors to locate them.
A number of existing LEGO Star Wars models are also referenced as the game unfolds. Many vehicles in the game are exact recreations of LEGO sets in the Star Wars range; everything from Microfighters to UCS models can be seen here. Some more obscure and unusual sets even make an appearance, such as 75241 Action Battle Echo Base Defence.
If you grew up with the early LEGO titles, you’ll probably want to turn Mumble Mode on. This cheat replaces all spoken dialogue in the game with mumbled gibberish, reflecting the silent comedy of the earliest TT Games Lego titles.
Of course, nostalgia comes in many flavours – and if you’re a younger Star Wars fan, you may prefer to leave the voices on. This is because a number of original voice actors from Star Wars media have reprised their roles for the game.
Besides obvious choices like Anthony Daniels and Billy Dee Williams, several actors from the Clone Wars TV show have provided new voice work. Highlights include Matt Lanter (who played Anakin Skywalker) James Arnold-Taylor (who played Obi-Wan Kenobi) and Tom Kane (who has played Yoda on multiple occasions for Star Wars media). Since a stroke has forced the latter to retire from voice acting for good, his presence in this game is very special indeed.
Other highlights include Brian Blessed (who played Boss Nass in The Phantom Menace) Sam Witwer (who’s played both Darth Maul and Emperor Palpatine in multiple projects) Catherine Taber (responsible for voicing Padmé Amidala) and Matthew Wood (responsible for voicing both General Grievous and his battle droid subordinates). Keep an ear out for any other familiar voices during gameplay, but remember that (since all dialogue has been re-recorded) a lot of original voice actors are missing altogether.
Tribulations at TT Games
Despite the positive reception from fans, the release of LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga has been tinged with sadness. At the same time as WB Games finally announcing the game’s release date, video game news site Polygon published a story about the developer’s unsavoury working practices.
Development started on the game in 2017, during a period of high tension between TT Games’ employees and management. The former took issue with tight development schedules, outdated tools and the company’s ‘crunch’ culture. Crunch is a common issue in video game development; it refers to the practice of working unreasonably long hours, with frequent unpaid overtime.
This seems to have been a consequence of LEGO games’ annual releases; a diverse range of licences have made LEGO titles a regular feature of the gaming landscape since 2005. More troublingly, crunch apparently wasn’t a mere emergency measure and became a regular tool in the developers’ arsenal. It was also accompanied by hostile behaviour from leads if they felt staff were slacking off.
Employees of TT Games have made allegations of ‘soft-spoken blackmail’, and described their experiences within the company as ‘PTTSD’. Programmers, visual effects staff and animation staff reportedly suffered the worst, while QA testers for TT Fusion cited numerous issues during their time there. The innovations of LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga appear to have come at a high cost.
That said, a former member of the development team has encouraged people to buy the game regardless. This is (apparently) because developers of the game receive sales-based bonuses, which are obviously influenced by how many people purchase the game. However, we don’t know if these bonuses are still in effect at this time.
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga review
Of course, after all these years of waiting and development (and heartache) one question remains: is LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga a good time? Our review of the game answers that question in more detail, but in a nutshell: yes, provided the TT Games formula isn’t one that’s exhausted you yet.
It’s a game that’s obviously more ambitious than the ones that preceded it. Its worlds are bigger, its graphics are shinier and its character roster is (to use a technical term) off the chain. But it’s also – for better or worse – a TT Games LEGO title, with the familiar, simplistic gameplay we’ve come to expect.
There are obviously some new elements to look forward to (like improved combat, and a tower defence segment). But even these can stray into style over substance – hardly surprising when we consider the game’s young target audience. And the efforts to open up the world can leave the game’s overall design feeling inconsistent and unsatisfying.
Still – of all the games to use this formula – LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is definitely the most ambitious expression of it. If that sounds like a good time, don’t hesitate in picking it up.
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga platforms
In the tradition of modern-day LEGO games, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is releasing on multiple platforms. You can play it on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch. There may be some minor graphical or performance differences between each of these platforms, but we don’t expect any major issues at this time. The PlayStation 4 version of the game should be fully backwards-compatible with the PS5 as well.
The file sizes for the digital versions of the title are considerable, which is to be expected considering how expansive the games are. The PlayStation 5 edition of the game has a reported download size of 38.182GB, while the Xbox version is 42.89GB. The PC and Nintendo Switch versions are 40GB and 14.218GB respectively. However, these file sizes could fluctuate if additional updates and patches are released.
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga deluxe edition
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga has received a deluxe edition with certain exclusive features. Each version of the deluxe edition comes with special box art featuring Darth Vader. American versions also feature a slip case – removing this slip case removes Vader’s helmet, referencing the famous moment in Return of the Jedi.
In addition to this box art, the deluxe edition includes six downloadable character packs (although more may be on the way). Fans who acquire a physical deluxe edition will also receive an exclusive Luke Skywalker minifigure. This version of Luke shows him drinking blue milk – one of the most famous foodstuffs in Star Wars more broadly.
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga characters
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is confirmed to have 422 playable characters across its various character classes. Characters from the nine main movie releases can be unlocked in the base game, but characters from the other movies and TV shows (like Rogue One and The Mandalorian) are only available through DLC Character Packs.
These are included with the Deluxe Edition of the game, although they can be bought separately for use in the standard edition. In either case, they require an internet connection to access them.
If you’re worried about Grogu coming to harm during gameplay, worry no longer. Any blaster fire aimed at Grogu will be blocked by the lid of his hover-pram, in an impressive bit of attention to detail. Child characters (such as the young Anakin Skywalker) are also immune to harm – at least when you’re not controlling them. This quirk can be used to access remote areas of the game world more easily.
It’s important to remember that the release date of the DLC characters is staggered, so – even if you’ve bought them – you might not be able to play them for a little while. The Trooper Character Pack and Rogue One character packs will be widely released on April 19, whereas the Bad Batch and Mandalorian character packs will be released on May 4.
One feature that is conspicuously absent is character creation. A tweet from TT Games has confirmed that this feature is unavailable in this title, dashing our dreams of a playable Jedi Bob in the process.
However, a glitch in the game may help to make up for this absence. Owners of the first Mandalorian character pack can exploit a bug to endlessly clone a chosen character – at least until the game crashes. It’s likely this bug will eventually be patched out, however.
Without further ado, look for your favourite character below:
Jedi
Jedi can use the Force to pick up objects, solving puzzles or creating new paths in the process. They can also use Mind Tricks to remotely control characters, make them dance, or attack people surrounding them. When they need to move around the game world Jedi can wall-run, cut along specific surfaces with a lightsaber and swing off Twirl Poles.
In combat, Jedi can use lightsabers to block or deflect enemy attacks. They can even throw a lightsaber to hit distant enemies.

Protocol Droid
Protocol Droids can access Protocol Terminals, which offer many different functions in the game. They allow you to control nearby devices (such as turrets, alarms or other droids) and open doors – provided you’ve found the passwords to unlock them. When a more hands-on approach is required, these characters can split in two to access new areas or solve puzzles.
The translation abilities of Protocol Droids lets them speak to every NPC in the game without cheating. Like Astromech Droids, Protocol Droids can also move through hostile territory without arousing suspicion.
The disassembly ability of Protocol Droids can offer an unofficial gameplay advantage. Since you can control each half independently, it effectively gives you a third playable character. This can make solving certain puzzles easier than usual.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga character codes
Around the time of the game’s announcement, the LEGO Group produced a number of Star Wars sets with exclusive codes. When entered into the game, these codes unlock corresponding vehicles and characters in the game to play with.
The repeated delays to the game means most of these sets are no longer available for purchase. Luckily, the codes are readily available for use by anyone who purchases the game. There are also several other codes to unlock characters within the game.
To use these codes, go to the pause menu in the game and look for a key-shaped icon named “Enter Code”. Select it to bring up a keyboard, and then enter the codes below. If a green box appears, you’ve successfully redeemed the code. If a red box appears, the code is invalid or has already been redeemed.

As such, you may want to consider pre-order bonuses from other retailers before you buy. However, doing so will cost you the exclusive Luke Skywalker minifigure since these offers only apply to the game’s standard edition.
Some retailers may offer some kind of bonus with the standard physical edition. Amazon, for example, is currently bundling the Classic Character Pack with all standard editions of the game. If you’re particularly nostalgic for this era, this might be your best option.
More generally, discounts on the game may prove hard to come by at the moment. However, the price of the physical game is likely to drop as time passes.
If you’d prefer to buy the game digitally, you can do so via PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and PC digital storefronts. These may also offer discounts on the game going forward.
ShopTo is offering several discounts on digital versions for Xbox and PC. You can order the standard digital edition on Xbox for £41.85, or get the deluxe digital edition on Xbox for £49.85. If you’ve already plumped for the standard edition, have no fear; the Skywalker Saga Character pack (for Xbox) includes the missing character packs, and is available here for £10.85.
PC gamers can grab the standard edition of the game from ShopTo for £30.85, or the deluxe edition for £38.85. You will need a Steam account to take advantage of this offer, but pre-ordering here will grant you access to the Trooper Pack and classic Obi-Wan character as well.
