Here’s how the life-size LEGO Icons McLaren MP4/4 was built
An amazing feat of “teamwork and ingenuity,” here’s what went into creating a life-size version of the LEGO Icons McLaren MP4/4.
Last week, McLaren’s social media accounts revealed details of a life-size LEGO Icons McLaren MP4/4 assembled from an incredible 400,000 bricks. Taking more than 700 combined hours to build, the vehicle is based on both the iconic real-life car and 10330 McLaren MP4/4 & Ayrton Senna, as part of a year-long celebration of the legendary racing driver’s 30-year legacy in 2024.
The story behind the design and construction of the 1:1 scale car is equally as impressive, with McLaren recently revealing just what went into the build. Described as a feat of “teamwork and ingenuity,” the project was of great significance to the team of LEGO engineers tasked with creating the replica.
“We’re building the McLaren MP4/4 because it represents a true legend in the world of motorsport,” said LEGO Certified Professional, Riccardo Zangelmi. “It’s a symbol of the golden age of Formula 1, embodying an era of unparalleled innovation and competition.”
Riccardo headed up a team of four members to assemble the LEGO McLaren MP4/4 model, including Ruozzi Matteo, Filippo Valcavi and Matteo Monzali. In addition the LEGO France team also provided additional support and resources.
The team began by undertaking plenty of research on both the real-life car and the LEGO Icons McLaren MP4/4. Work then began on specific shapes required for the build, breaking the vehicle down into its individual parts to create the replica.
“Every element is meticulously planned,” said Riccardo. “Nothing is done at random, as each part must serve a specific purpose.”
A steel structure was created to provide a framework for the build and support the 610 kg weight of its 400,00 bricks. The LEGO Icons McLaren MP4/4 had to be robust enough to travel and be taken apart and reassembled, with the car being shipped from the LEGO Large Scale Model warehouse in Italy to Monaco, where it’s currently displayed.
“LEGO bricks are truly remarkable; they can withstand an incredible amount of weight and tension,” said Riccardo. “However, they do have their limits. Knowing these limits is crucial when building because pushing them too far can compromise the integrity of the structure. It’s essential to have a deep knowledge of the capabilities and constraints of LEGO bricks to ensure that the final model is not only impressive but also stable and durable.”
The result is a remarkable life-size creation, one that’s approximately 14 times larger than 10330 McLaren MP4/4 & Ayrton Senna. Clocking in at 439cm in length, the build features 19 removable parts hidden around the car, with four being wheels and the remainder waiting for racing fans to spot them.
“Big builds are always fascinating to watch because they seem so surreal,” Ricardo explained. “When you look at a life-size car made of LEGO bricks, you’re not just seeing a replica, you’re witnessing a work of art and dedication. You see the culmination of hundreds of hours of meticulous work.
