LEGO Harry Potter

Seven books, eight movies, a stage play, a prequel series, and a LEGO theme - JK Rowling’s Harry Potter has spawned a lot of content over the years. As a LEGO theme, the sets have stayed largely focused on the core plot of Harry Potter, centred around the original films, with some also covering characters, scenes, and locations from the Fantastic Beasts series.

LEGO Harry Potter minifigures

In the beginning, LEGO Harry Potter minifigures were yellow, like all minifigures from other themes. However, in 2004, the minifigures were switched to skin tone, reflecting the characters from the movies more closely.

As the titular character, Harry Potter is the most well-represented character of all LEGO Harry Potter minifigures, coming in dozens of different versions, from the Muggleborn boy we first meet to the adult wizard he becomes later in the series. Along the way, we get minifigure versions not just of witches and wizards, but also Dementors, half-giants, and house elves.

The wide variety of magical beings and creatures means that some of these designs require some unique parts and creative uses of LEGO elements, resulting in some truly impressive figures and characters. Not only have these populated sets, but LEGO Harry Potter has also had not just one, but two Collectible Minifigures series: 2018’s 71022 Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts and 2020’s 71028 Harry Potter Series 2.

As the names would suggest, the former included minifigures based on characters from both Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts, bringing Newt Scamander, Jacob Kowalski, Tina Goldstein, Queenie Goldstein, and Credence Barebone to LEGO for the very first time. The latter was purely focused on Harry Potter and co., featuring some lesser-spotter characters like James and Lily Potter and the goblin Griphook.

Another prime spot to find LEGO Harry Potter minifigures are the annual advent calendars. The first LEGO Harry Potter advent calendar came in 2019 and has been followed by another one every year since. They tend to bring a wintry wizarding scene to life, with festive Weasley jumpers and magical presents galore.

LEGO Harry Potter sets

Of course, the meat of any theme are the sets themselves. Harry Potter LEGO has built up an ever-growing brick-built Wizarding World, with sets not just based on the iconic Hogwarts Castle but also Hogsmeade, Diagon Alley, Privet Drive, and more. Harry and his friends journey into dozens of locations and nearly all of them have been covered at this point – and some more than once.

Distinct waves tend to focus on specific movies, with the revival of the theme in 2018 seeing waves of sets focused on the Philosopher's Stone and the Chamber of Secrets, 2019 spotlighting the Prisoner of Azkaban and the Goblet of Fire, and 2020 on the Order of the Phoenix and the Half-Blood Prince). From there, the lines have blurred slightly, with less direct focuses on particular eras of Harry Potter.

What’s more, several LEGO Harry Potter Collector’s Edition sets have surfaced, such as 76391 Hogwarts Icons - Collectors' Edition and 76405 Hogwarts Express – Collectors' Edition. Both feature mighty piece counts that pick out every detail and the former isn’t based on a specific scene, a rarity for the theme. Where they mostly recreate actual locations and scenes, 76391 Hogwarts Icons - Collectors' Edition brings together various famous items from throughout the Harry Potter franchise.

LEGO Harry Potter Hogwarts Castle

The jewel in any LEGO Harry Potter collector’s crown is sure to be the LEGO Harry Potter Hogwarts Castle – but there’s not just one way to get your hands on it. The very first version debuted in 2001 with 4709 Hogwarts Castle but many more sets based on the school have sprung up over the years.

The largest is the microfigure-scale 71043 Hogwarts Castle, released in 2018, soon to be followed by a smaller model of the entire castle in 2023, as 76419 Hogwarts Castle and Grounds hit shelves. Both bring something unique to the table, with 71043 being the largest and arguably most detailed version of the wizarding school ever to join the theme.

While 76419 is smaller, it has its own unique style that helps it stand apart from the rest of the LEGO Harry Potter theme, sat on a display-ready base and with a special golden minifigure as well. Notably, both of these sets are not minifigure-scale. Instead, several LEGO Harry Potter sets have been released over the years to gradually form a minifigure-scale version of the castle, bit by bit. Many of them are substantial enough to display on their own but they also fit together to form a sprawling version of the school for fans to display.

LEGO Harry Potter games

Not only has LEGO Harry Potter made a splash with physical sets, but it’s also sparked video games based on the minifigures and brick-built locations. You can play through Harry’s time at school in a series of games in LEGO’s style, building your way through various tasks and watching cutscenes of Potter characters – with a dash of LEGO gaming’s unique sense of humour.

The LEGO Harry Potter Collection was split into two parts, with Years 1 to 4 launching in 2010 and Years 5 to 7 coming the following year in 2011. The video games were released for the PlayStation 4 in 2016, as part of the Lego Harry Potter Collection, and also for the Xbox One and Nintendo Switch in 2018.

As well as this popular series, LEGO Harry Potter games also included two sandbox games, 2001’s LEGO Creator: Harry Potter and 2022’s Creator: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. What’s more, both LEGO Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts characters featured in LEGO Dimensions bonus levels, with Harry, Lord Voldemort, and Newt Scamander available as playable figures.
